There appears to be an open vent in the wall. It might have been used as an escape hatch, with someone staying behind to cover it with the cabinet so nothing could pursue the runners. You haven't seen or heard anyone else running around the hallway, so that must have been much earlier in the day. Maybe the scent of people lingered in the area? Or someone tried to climb back up the blocked vent, getting the monster's attention. You're not too sure.
Grab some clean linens, and try crawling into the vent but leave the clean linens in front of the open vent so we can mask the smell of peoples behind us. Tread very very carefully. >.<
