Both Dr. Finch and the agent keep their guns fixed on the dead body, as if expecting something to come bursting out of the corpse. Dr. Finch slowly, carefully pulls the ringing phone from his pocket. It reads as an Unknown Caller. With a shaking grip, he hands the phone over to the agent.

"I-I-I believe it's for you, Miss."

She takes on a very skeptical expression, but she takes the phone from him. It continues to ring despite the time passed by the process, the caller determined to get through. She answers the phone.

A pause as the other end of the phone speaks.

"Who is this?"

The other side of the conversation goes unheard. The agent turns to Dr. Finch, her face expressing more confusion than ever. "He wants you to turn on your TV. He says he wants to show you a neat trick."

Dr. Finch stares back at her, as if it's some kind of sick joke. He finally replies. "Wh... what is going on?"

"I don't know," the agent says. "He won't tell me who he is. He just... insists on you turning on the television."

They glance back toward the body on the floor. It still hasn't moved. Dr. Finch believes that the man likely injected himself, and whatever was in the needle killed him... but he doesn't know why. Why would someone just... kill themselves? The guard could have escaped. He could have done anything. Why inject himself? His death looked miserable, torturous--why not just shoot himself?

The more the seconds tick by, the more Dr. Finch thinks about it, the more afraid he becomes.

Guess we should turn on the tv, hopefully it won't explode or something. Also I hope this doesn't have to do with the cult.

I don't have a good feeling about this. Turning on the TV is going to 100% do something awful, especially in connection to the guy who just needled himself to 'death'. This isn't going to be a 'neat trick'. The person on the phone might be Arvin Carpenter, and who knows what sick tricks he's up to?

But turning on the TV can be done remotely regardless of what we do, I'm going to guess, so this isn't good. Let's be on our guard. How much longer 'till we can reach Dr. Finch ourselves?

Let's get Dr. Finch to calm down a little so he can think clearly. I think we picked up a 'good level' trick that won't cause problems with physical exertion, right? At least, in theory.

The trick is almost certainly a memetic attempt to foil our connection to the good Doctor. Something like what was done to Macland.

Let's calm Finch down a little and take the phone back. Does Fuse know anything that would let us use the phone to fuck with this weirdo? We could like, hack the phone and trace the call or something. Does Fuse know?

i don't think we should turn the tv on. if this person could do it remotely, they would have done it. don't do anything. hang up the phone, even.

I know it has to be a trap, and something bad could happen, but I REALLY want to see this neat trick! Turn the TV on!

What if it turns out to be an episode of "Epic Trap Battles of History".
♫Bu-cha-cha pi cha-cha bu bu!♫

I suddenly just wondered if Caius would have a clue about any of this? ._.? I guess he would have said something already if he knew - he probably heard us describe the drug to Fuse. In which case I guess this is a spanking new protocol them Elegance guards are having to undergo.

Don't Just Not turn the TV on, while both of them move behind it, and Staying behind it, unplug all the cables from it so it can't be done remotely then face it away from Red Shirt. Exit the room to one without windows.

I hate to be the one to point this out, but if I'm understanding the technology behind the world here correctly, nothing is plugged into sockets anymore - that's outdated technology. It's all done magnetically with EMF coils built into the walls and things. There's no easy way to shut it off without the appropriate equipment, none of which we have on hand. MM can clarify, though! ;v;
Morgenstern 6th Sep 2017, 9:46 PM edit delete reply
This is correct. Everything's done through induction--sockets and cords are fairly rare (and old).
Baeronius 6th Sep 2017, 9:20 PM edit delete reply
Power is transmitted through Electromagnetic induction in this place.

And yes induction is a thing. We have pacemakers with external batteries that use this.

Oh! I just remembered my toothbrush uses induction to charge. You place it in it's little port for the night. Heh.

Take the phone and talk to the guy on the line.
rufiangel 6th Sep 2017, 9:25 PM edit delete reply
This isn't a bad idea as a delay tactic as well. Also, if my guess is correct and it IS Arvin Carpenter, we can tell through our perception link through Dr. Finch, given we've heard Carpenter's voice before. Doctor versus Doctor?

Is it Macland, perhaps? He *did* say he had a plan. We should probably check on Macland real quick, as long as it doesn't divert our attention from Finch for too long (gah, we really need to learn to focus on multiple people at once).
Baeronius 6th Sep 2017, 9:48 PM edit delete reply
So you essentially want us to go crosseyed?

Focus could be a strange thing if that happens.

I recommend that Finch NOT turn on the TV(but bet good money that the agent does anyway. She seems gung-ho enough). Keep our raven watching the lady to see what happens to her, have Finch retreat into his bathroom, maybe? He can say he needs a couple moments. I's probably true anyway. He might refuse though, if he's curious about this...trick. Lets not force him or anything, if he's curious enough to risk it then that's fine. I'd just rather he didn't.
