Morgenstern
You check on Pierce. He seems to be watching the flowers in the hallway of the Mars base, and thinking quietly. You (politely) get his attention--it doesn't seem to startle him all that much. You ask if he might be able to translate some runes for you.

"I could try," he says.

You have him picture the runes in his mind. ...One at a time, not all at once. You don't want to accidentally cast a spell in his brain or something.

He nods, and begins to read off what he's visualizing. "That which kills beyond killing, death beyond death. ... My ally will not make it home, my enemy will not make it to hell. ... If you had to sacrifice a soldier, which would it be?"

You stop, the last translation sounding a little too familiar.

"In general," he says, "it seems to be describing a weapon that destroys the target's soul in exchange for the wielder's life. Well, soul, depending on your beliefs--in some arcane traditions, what would be the soul is referred to as the psychic self. I was never too sure of the difference, personally."

You thank Pierce, and leave the gun alone for now. After a bit of a struggle, you open the long box on the floor.

On one side of the box are old photos--hundreds of them, it seems, all blurry photographs of Bigfoot. ...Or Sasquatch, or a yeti. On the other end of the box are cast footprints, but they're... uneven, not clean cut, as though some creature dug their heel in and then shook it about. Lastly, sealed in a glass container, are what appear to be samples of fur.

The fur is... blurry. That's the only way you can think to describe it. Not fuzzy, but blurry. You look at it from different angles, but you can't seem to view the fur with any satisfying clarity. You wonder if it's not, possibly, a trick of the glass itself... because otherwise, you can't wrap your head around how it works.

For those curious about the part that sounds, "a little too familiar":
"If you had to kill one of your friends, which one would it be?"

Grey "X" box next.

Not Nil. Us. Costing our friends their lives is Jane's deepest fear.

To contextualize: This is before our heart-to-heart with our Red and before she got on-board with the whole having friends/hugs/ice cream thing we do now. Our eldritch side having just awoken (more-or-less), she tried to scare us into accepting her and the calling to drink worlds and stretch thin; going so far as to recreate the moment she awoke with her as the monster instead of the actual hospital monster.
But after the moment we hugged her, her being us, emotion overcame instinct (for lack of a better word) and she finally stopped pestering us to do terrible things.

I kind of love the implication that the reasons all photos of Sasquatch are blurry is that *he himself is blurry.* We might wanna try to figure out how he does that...

That gun sounds like bad juju, but it's the sort of thing we may end up needing to use. Let's hope we never have to, though. And let's keep it in a very, very, VERY safe place. I'm kind of liking the idea that someone suggested a while back in the Discord about having Mom's Red burrow into the earth around our bunker a bit to form an incredibly safe storage space.

Remember the 2000 Invisible Man series ? We learn eventually that the "technology" they used to create the quicksilver turning stuff it coats invisible was pretty much a yeti's organ.

Might be able to cheat the price on the gun.
Create an autonomous golem, have said golem use the gun, lose the golem get a shot in on whatever we deemed worthy of the gun.

Course, the gun might not appreciate someone being cheeky with its function, and fire a much less powerful shot. Eh, moot point since we don't really need it right now.

I don't think that would work. I believe that the gun would use the wielders life as ammo. It might not work on a golem because it wouldn't have a soul. Though that gun is a cheat weapon. I believe we could kill Thale with it and not even get close. As Pierce said, "soul is referred to as the psychic self". If Thale ever made a clone or something which had mostly him in it. It would have his psychic self or at least connected to it. If we would shoot the clone/puppet of Thale it would destroy his psychic self. And isn't he using his blood as a current to use his psychic self to control other people. At least, that is what I believe. Gun might end everything sooner rather than later, but at a great cost. It might not work as I intended but at least I believe that gun would be the only way to kill Thale. Since he could move his consciousness into another body, but killing his psychic self would not allow him to use blood to move himself and survive. At least, that is what might happen.

I'm apt to agree about this thing being an option to definitely kill Thale. I also think we need to stick it on Mars--maybe even outside the bunker on Mars--and leave it alone until we either understand the magic it's using or else have no other options for putting Thale down.

... Also, if we ever have to fire it, I suspect Elizabeth's going to volunteer to take the shot.
Wote 4th Apr 2018, 7:46 AM edit delete reply
Actually, to elaborate, we need to bury it on Mars after counting off a hundred paces with Fuse, a hundred paces in a different direction with Elizabeth, a hundred paces in a third direction with Caius, and the last hundred paces after another turn with a tiny blood golem.

And then we bury the golem with it so that we can find it again in a pinch. And leave no other trace to mark where we put the damned thing.

There is a possibility that this will not kill Thale as he clones himself. I am not sure how that interacts with things.
Ronmr 4th Apr 2018, 1:42 PM edit delete reply
Exactly that is why it is the best weapon. He can clone himself. But he can't clone his psychic self. If we kill his psychic self and if he managed to clone himself, the clone wouldn't be Thale anymore. Maybe in body but not in soul. Also if we do that we might have a sinapsis kill. Every thrall of Thale might also die from a backlash. What I mean to say, is that if he clones himself with his Blood, he would actually die, but if he clones himself normally he wouldn't be as dangerous as before.

Also, Wote, does Elizabeth have a soul? I believe that Michelle and Caius do have souls. But does she? She isn't normaly grown is she? Maybe she does but I am still unsure.

Just... slowly close the box to the gun, and never mess with it again. That thing is bad.

Gray box next.

y'know.... this is just weird. What's next, the mothman?

Though we could probably just make like a hood/hood trim out of that fur and make it really hard to make out a face, or some other lateral thinking puzzle solution.

Seems like a near invisibility adaptation, very interesting. Better than active camouflage. Not necessarily useful as it is right now, but interesting knowledge. More stuff to look into, if we can figure out the trick, it could be useful.

We definitely don't need to be experimenting with the gun. Maybe when we've got more magic under our belts we can have a better idea of what we're in for.

Is that gray brown box the last? Besides the one with the door in it. Let's have a look.

Didn't the slime regenerate? if we take enough slime and put it somewhere else would it make another cube? If so, we could make slime bombs :o

Hia. I caught up with this comic a little while back. This is some pretty good stuff.

We don't have to kill any good people to use this gun. The blood can control people, after all, and it wouldn't be too bad to sacrifice, say, our dearest friend Carpenter as a means of getting rid of thayle.

Also this sounds like something that should be discussed with red at some point.

Do you think we could kill Nil with the gun? Also, the grey box next.
