Before you proceed, you ask Lydia if she's heard anything unusual about Patton Thale.

"Patton... Thale?" Suddenly, her eyes light up. "Wait, do YOU know something about Patton Thale? Is he in on the conspiracy?! I know his dad bought unmarked government property, which Grizwald said could be Zone Fifty reports, which ties into the greatermindcontrolplotthat--"

She stops, wincing, and grabbing at one of her sides. Grizwald pats her on the head.

"Patton Thale part o' tha guys tryin' to kill ya'll?"

"Somethin' like that," Michelle replies.

You explain to Lydia what your, uh, deal is. At least, as succinctly as you can. You tell her that you know Macland had her captive, but Grizwald managed to save her before you could. You ask why, exactly, Macland was holding her.

"Okay, so, like..." Lydia takes a deep breath. "The Tobu Robotics hack caused Tobu's stocks to go through the floor. The company's dead in the water. Macland Row's company Row Dynamics capitalized on this and their profit margins are skyrocketing while they pick up all of Tobu's old business. Conveeenient but not illegal. Buuut~"

She almost sings the last part before taking another breath.

"The city council is pressuring everybody that had their property damaged by the Tobu hack to either fix it or sell, something about city beautification and economic value. They're also slapping a bunch of tax junk on all the big property moguls that might try to buy the messed up buildings... all of them EEEXCEPT~ for Gesenai Shirai. Gesenai Shirai, who's real big buds with Macland Row. This sets it up for Ms. Shirai to buy up all the middle tier property on the cheap and Macland Row to get all the business left behind by Tobu. Between the two of them they'd be running most of the middle tier business districts."

Dr. Finch starts to say something, but Lydia cuts him off.

"THAT'S ALL WEIRD ENOUGH right? Buuut~ in addition to all that Macland Row was trying to negotiate contracts with Tobu's clients before the hack, and Gesenai freed up a bunch of money to buy all that property before the damage happened, like they both knew some stuff was gonna go down. I talked to some of the Row Dynamics employees and they said the Mac wasn't surprised the hack happened, he was just surprised by when. I guess it went off earlier than he thought it would, but the whole thing itself didn't seem to shock him. Combiiined~ with the city council helping those two run their scam it comes off like there's a big ol' honkin' conspiracy to give a handful of peeps the whole city. When Macland Row found out how much digging I was doing he sent some of his thugs after me."

Grizwald smacks his lips. "Plus, all them lootins an' fires goin' on in tha lower tiers? Shirai's got buildings down there, too. None of 'em's been touched. All tha crazy mutant riots have done gone right around Shirai's properties. Real polite of 'em, ain't it?"

"It's almost suspicious how obviously suspicious it is," Lydia huffs. "Like, they're hardly even trying to hide it!"

"They don't have to," Dr. Finch finally states. "Have you watched the news lately? There's a stark contrast between the nature of the riots. Some are organic lashing out against perceived oppressors, as we've always seen in this city... but some are more coordinated. Focused. Organized. I'm no expert on anarchist movements but even I can see the difference in their patterns. The news doesn't address it. The media doesn't cover why this happening, it only strives to convince the middle and upper tiers how dangerous the lower tiers are. It paints all mutants with a broad, monstrous brush, and never dips into the root causes. This goes all the way to the top, with the structure of the city forcing the poor into a corner... and that's before people like Thale, Shirai, or Macland begin funding the rampages personally. These... people, they have their fingers in both the government and the media. They control what the public will hear, see, believe."

"I still remember us talkin' about Elegance," Michelle states. "How Macland could kill a guy in the middle of the club, an' nobody would even know."

Dr. Finch nods. "This whole city is transforming into that lurid state of affairs... or perhaps it always has been. A member of Thale's circle can commit blatant crimes, fund illicit behavior, send murderers to our homes. The city protects them. The news brushes their misdeeds off, or neglects to report them outright. Your news company, Lydia... do you know if they hired police to find you? Do you know if they took any action at all after you disappeared?"

Lydia stands there, briefly, stunned. She slowly shakes her head. "I... I dunno. My boss was kinda sorta trying to talk me out of doing this story--"

Dr. Finch nods. "They could be on the payroll. They could just be afraid. They may have just had their proverbial hands tied. Difficult to say anymore."

Thank the lord, she's clean. Ok, back to reading the update.
Kitty 7th Oct 2017, 8:12 PM edit delete reply
Well, it's just a *little* bit daunting seeing all the forces arrayed against us, explained all at once like that.
Kitty 7th Oct 2017, 8:13 PM edit delete reply
Oh! We should probably let Grizwald know that we brought a phone with a tracker here at one point. And also we should remember to check through our raven's eyes periodically.

Lydia's clean of StQ~ yay~ :D

Well, all of this has probably knocked her for six. Poor reporter lady.

So no one else is on this story? What would it take to really blow the lid off this one? Is Lydia on her own enough? Because she can't be the only clean and truthful reporter in this city, can she be? >_>? Does she have any contacts that would work with her together in this investigative journalism? If she has friends and they work together but very quietly and silently, but build together something that could be used to massively expose the upper tier crust for their misdeeds to the middle and lower tiers, it could really help disrupt the flow of things from continuing in the conspiracy's favour. We could help scrape whatever proof she needs together, since we're kind of doing that already.

She needs to at least pretend she's not on the story anymore, though, if she wants to stay alive. Hopefully her escape from Mac's house doesn't raise any alarms there. >_>a

Unless she wants to join the... we need a team name.
Skybirds15 8th Oct 2017, 1:54 AM edit delete reply
I've been mentally calling us team Fucked, cause the people we're going against have money, power, connections, people... and all we have is 1.5 space aliens, Hackerman, Scarred Cuddly Teddy bear, a partly-insane politically minded Doctor, Homeless vent rat, Gay MMA Man, and Robocop. If they get really serious, and assassinate us under the guise of us, say, being terrorists planning to blow something up, we're gone. Our extra-dimensional bunker can only help so much.

I'd go with "the B-team".
We totally have crazy plans, fighting against corrupt executives, militia and federal agents; featuring wildly varied skillsets in charmingly unique characters; united through Blood.

And we seriously hate it when a plan goes awry.
No cigars, though.

Well, looks like my project was delayed a tad.

Might see it sometime this week.
Steve 8th Oct 2017, 1:12 AM edit delete reply
Well, in any case, she's clean, so I say we spill what we know, and offer our friends that we do have 1 last bunk in our secret base
Guest 8th Oct 2017, 1:49 AM edit delete reply
even if she's clean of STQ, we don't necessarily know if there isn't something else that's up w her. She also, in my personal opinion, seems to blab a good bit; I don't know if spilling all the beans would be a good idea.
Steve 8th Oct 2017, 2:32 AM edit delete reply
So I guess that means we have to kidnap her now. Got it.

I'm kidding
PurpleKetchup 8th Oct 2017, 3:14 AM edit delete reply
Jane should explain the danger of StQ and the only remedy know so far that doesn't lead to death or red outgrowth.

If Grizwald cannot hide her away we can invite her to the bunker, also give her a syringe of Red. It's probably the best way to keep an eye on people we care about without breaching too much of their privacy (until they inject themselves, obviously).
Nayru9572 8th Oct 2017, 2:50 AM edit delete reply
Ask Grizwald what he knows about Zone 50, and then specify about the bunkers and if he knows what's up with them.

And don't forget about the raven. We need to know when we need to scram. Griz probably has a secret exit here in case something happens.
Blue_Elite 8th Oct 2017, 3:28 AM edit delete reply
Sense Grizwald seems to be knowledgeable about previous failed projects we should ask him specifically about the androids of Bunker B. Part of the reason we're not exploring that now is fear of them going haywire and killing us.

If we could actually recruit them it'd be a huge boon. Heck, Grizwald may even be able to help in that regard.
Memo 8th Oct 2017, 10:17 AM edit delete reply
We should ask Lydia if she wants to come with us, maybe she has a safe house of her own, she prefers to use.
She probably wouldn't be safe at home though.
I agree with giving her a syringe, if we have more, and she wants it.
How many syringes do we have left? We should get more, if we are running low. Maybe get some on our next shopping spree, together with a cheap drone.
